Three men were arrested on Saturday for allegedly killing a 33-year-old Girgaon resident and dumping his body on the Kennedy Bridge.
The arrested men have been identified as Deepak Thakur, 26, Rahul Thakur, 22 and Krishna Bhatt, 38. The police are trying to trace the prime accused, Nizam Hussain, who allegedly plotted the murder.
The accused allegedly called the victim, Akash Pande, near Girgaon late on Friday night and hit him on the head with a gunny bag full of stones. They then smashed Pande’s head and stuffed his body in a bag.
“They had planned to throw the bag on the railway tracks. However, they left Pande’s body on Kennedy bridge and fled when they saw a jeep approaching, which they mistook for a police vehicle,” said Sanjay Diwadkar, senior inspector at the Gamdevi police station.
According to the police, Pande and Hussain were professional rivals. “Both of then used to supply labourers to caterers. However, they had been fighting for the last few days and had become increasingly competitive,” said Diwadkar.
The police also said that the body was discovered by a passer-by on Saturday morning, who informed the police.
“In the course of our investigations, we found out the rivalry between Pande and Hussain through an informant. Hussain had fled, but we caught the other three from their Wadala residence, eight hours after the body was discovered, said Diwadkar.
“We are now trying to trace the whereabouts of Hussain as well as Pande’s family, said an officer of the Gamdevi police station, on the condition of anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The police confirmed that none of the accused have past criminal records.
