The police arrested a man, his wife and their accomplice on Saturday for brutally murdering a catering employee after he did not return Rs 600 that he had borrowed from one of them.

The three hit Tambi alias Nepali (40) with a stone and then reportedly thrashed him with bamboo sticks.

The accused have been identified as Vinod Shinde, Dattaram Kamble and his wife Geeta Kamble, all residents of Jitendra Nagar in Dindoshi, Malad (E). Shinde and Kamble used to sell fodder for cows near Laxmi Narayan temple in Dindoshi.

Tambi, who knew the accused well, lived on the footpath near Ashoka Hospital in Malad. On Wednesday Tambi, an alleged alcoholic, had gone to Jitendra Nagar, when the three approached him to return the money he had borrowed from Shinde a few months ago. Tambi said he did not have money, which infuriated Shinde. In a fit of rage, Geeta lifted a stone and hit Tambi’s head.

After Tambi fell unconscious, the trio fled the spot. Locals informed the police and Tambi was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was shifted to KEM Hospital where he died while undergoing treatment.

“During investigation, we learnt that Shinde was missing since the day Tambi was attacked,” said API Mohan Patil of Dindoshi police station.
