Three men were arrested for allegedly setting two Omnis and two motorcycles on fire at Dharamveer Nagar, near Thane Mental Hospital, on Saturday.

Thane Municipal Transport driver and Shiv Sena worker Vedprakash Mishra, who owns the four vehicles, claimed that he was targeted by members of a rival party.

The police, however, said the attack was because of personal enmity.

“We have arrested Sonu Kushawah (21), Shankar Marmat (19) and Piyush Kate (16), who are residents of Dharamveer Nagar,” said Senior Police Inspector R.B. Choudhary of the Wagale Estate police station. The police recovered bottles filled with petrol near the vehicles.

The police said that the three men had recently got into a scuffle with Mishra’s wife, Sunita, and had allegedly set the vehicles on fire to teach her a lesson.

“At 1.30 am, a local auto driver woke us up and told us that our vehicles were on fire. We suspect that the vehicles were targeted by a rival party because of a Shiv Sena hoarding in the area,” said Mishra. “My wife is the president of the Sena’s women’s wing and my son is the divisional head.”

Mishra alleged: “Earlier too these men have smashed the glass of our car and punctured the tyres. On Friday evening, they pelted stones at our vehicles.”
