A 32-year-old owner of a bar was shot dead on Tuesday by three unidentified men. They also killed a man who witnessed the murder.
The accused fled with over Rs 2 lakh and valuables belonging to the victims, said the police.
Investigation revealed that Rakesh More, who owns Archi bar in Awadh Nagar had received a letter by courier on Monday demanding Rs 25 lakh. The police are questioning the courier company staff. Officials claimed More had not informed them about the letter.
According to witnesses, the incident happened at around 11.45 pm, when More was closing his bar. The three men, who were standing nearby, called More. One of the men removed a country-made revolver from his pocket and shot him, killing him instantly, witnesses said.
“The accused took away a bag containing Rs 2 lakh, the day's collection, which More was taking back. They also took the gold ring he was wearing,” said Police Inspector Ganpat Pingle attached with the Boisar police station.
The police said when the accused were trying to flee, they realised that a 21-year-old man had witnessed the killing. “They chased Abdul Khan and killed him too,” added Pingle.
Police sources said Khan was shot in the head and he too died on the spot.
The witness was later identified by the police as a footwear vendor from Govandi. Khan, the police said, had come to Boisar to visit his in-laws and was returning home, when he was killed.
The police have not ruled out the possibility of the murder being the handiwork of Jabhua tribals who are known to indulge is such kind of killings for robbery.
A case of robbery and murder has been lodged against the unknown accused.
