Three teenaged boys sustained burn injuries after a tanker they were passing by on Monday afternoon emitted a ball of fire.

According to the police, the tanker is used to ferry chemicals. However, it was empty at the time of the accident.

Azimuddin Sheikh,13, and Mohammad Sayyad Sheikh, 14, were given first aid and discharged. Mohammad Sirajuddin Shaikh, 15, who sustained 30% burns, is still recuperating at Sion Hospital.

Bhimrao Rathod, senior inspector, Chembur police station, said, “The teenagers were going home after school. The mishap took place when they were crossing the road.”

He added, “We are not sure how this happened but suspect it has something to do with the remains of some chemical, which is normally transported in the tanker. At the time of the incident, the tanker was empty. We have called a mechanic to check the cause of the fire.”

Rathod said the driver of the tanker, Shiv Bahadur Yadav, 34, had been arrested on charge of negligence.

The tanker was going to a company to take delivery of methanol gas, said the senior officer.

“Around 2pm, the three teenagers who study in a municipal school in Chembur, were returning to their residence at Vashi Naka,” said another officer on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

“There was heavy traffic because of which there were narrow spaces between vehicles to cross over to the other side. The boys were close to the rear end of the tanker when it emitted a ball of fire. We are now trying to find what caused the fire,” he said.
