The inquiry into the stampede during a police recruitment drive in suburban Kalina here would be completed in three days, Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil said on Monday.

“The inquiry into the incident would be completed in three days. We will also see if someone’s negligence was responsible for the incident,” Patil told reporters.

The minister attributed the stampede in which one person was killed and 11 others were injured to the “eagerness of applicants to file papers at two places where recruitment process was on”.

More than 30,000 aspirants from Maharashtra had converged at Kalina police hostel, one of the centres for submission of recruitment forms to 3,600 posts of constables, since Sunday.

As the gate opened for candidates at 6 am on Monday, the crowd surged forward and broke the queue to submit the forms.
