The body of a 32-year-old former call centre employee was found in a dustbin at Malad on Sunday.

The police suspect that Devang Upadhaya was badly beaten up before being strangulated. They have detained, Jayesh Joshi, parental uncle of Upadhaya’s wife Poonam, on suspicion, but are waiting for the post-mortem report.

Joshi had been arrested on July 14 for assaulting Upadhay. However, he was later released on bail. Joshi has several other offences registered against him, said the police.

Devang, who lived in Liberty Garden in Malad (West), was working at a call centre in Malad. Three months ago, he had left that job, the police said adding that his father has a real estate business.

According to the police, a passerby who first saw the body informed them about the incident. The body had bruises all over. A cloth was wrapped around the neck, indicating that the deceased had probably been beaten up before being strangled. The police suspect the murder took place at some other spot and the body was then dumped at Liberty Garden.

Upadhay and his wife had been having marital disputes since a year and the couple had decided to part ways. They had applied for divorce, the police said adding that the couple has two children.

“We have registered a case of murder against an unidentified person. We have detained Joshi and inquiries are on,” said RD Prabhu, police inspector.
