37-year-old falls to death from seventh floor

mumbai Updated: Sep 18, 2009 02:38 IST

A 37-year-old businessman died after falling accidentally off the seventh floor of his building in Chembur on Thursday.
Sanjay Hemdeo, who had a readymade garments business, lived with his family on the seventh floor of Gurukrupa Apartment. The Chembur police said around 6.30 am, Hemdeo was sitting on a window ledge in the corridor and smoking.

“He had removed his slippers and was sitting on the window when he lost balance,” said Senior Inspector Balasaheb Pachundkar.

One of the residents found Hemdeo lying unconscious in the compound while he was passing by.

“The resident immediately alerted the watchman after which the police were informed around 7.15 am,” said an investigating officer.

The other members of the family — his mother, wife and a 10-year-old son were sleeping when the incident occurred. “As the smoke would have disturbed their sleep, Hemdeo was smoking outside his house,” said Police Inspector Dilip Raut. The police have registered a case of accidental death and do not suspect any foul play.

“We have taken down the statements of the family members. They do not suspect any foul play,” added Pachundkar.
