A real estate agent from Bangalore — who cheated two women under the pretext of getting married to them — was arrested by the Juhu police on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old accused —Vaiju Kundiraman Vatakatti —created an account on two mainstream matrimonial websites claiming that he was looking for an ideal match.
“Vatakatti targeted unmarried women from Mumbai in the age group of 35-40. After studying their profiles, with the alias of Sanju Vicky Nambiar, he would get in touch with them using their contact numbers available on the websites,” said Arun Bhagat, senior inspector, Juhu police station.
Claiming that he was a rich businessman, he would express interest in marrying them. On getting positive replies from them, he would ply to Mumbai to borrow money from them for allegedly making wedding arrangements.
“In November 2011, he took Rs1.8 lakh from a 38-year-old woman in Juhu and fled. A similar case was registered with the Mulund police station two years ago, wherein Vatakatti had reportedly taken jewellery worth Rs1.5 lakh and Rs1 lakh in cash from the victim,” said Bhagat.
The victim from Juhu filed a police complaint.
“We traced Vatakatti’s phone calls and after two months of investigation, found him near his residence in Bangalore on Tuesday. He has been brought to Mumbai. The court has remanded him in police custody till February 2,” he said.
The police are checking if Vatakatti has been involved in other cases of cheating too.
