An Andheri resident and three of his friends were arrested for confining a 40-year-old civil contractor for ransom and extorting Rs 1 lakh and taking away his Honda City.

Mohammed Sheikh, a civil contractor, was returning to his Military Road house, in Andheri (E) on Wednesday night, Prashant Waralkar (29) and at least five of his accomplices pushed him inside a car and took him to a flat in Panvel.

Sheikh alleged that he was assaulted and stripped and was asked to call his family for a ransom of Rs 5 lakh. Knowing that his family will not be able to arrange such a huge amount in a short time, the he called one of his friends, who agreed to bring Rs 1 lakh.

The rest of the amount was given to the accused in cheques.

Sheikh’s Honda City, which his friend had brought with him to Panvel, was also taken away by the accused, alleges Sheikh.

The police records said the victim after being confined for a day, was released on Thursday night. On Friday, he lodged a complaint against Waralkar and his accomplices at the Powai police station.

The next day, the Powai police arrested the four, including Waralkar.

Police said Waralkar is into property business and has at least three shop units which he has rented out for commercial purposes.

Waralkar, in his police statement, said Sheikh owed him Rs 27 lakh which he had borrowed few years ago through someone. But Sheikh, when asked by the police, said he did not know Waralkar.

“We are investigating all allegations and counter-allegations,” said Senior Police Inspector Ashok Jadhav of the Powai police station.
