Fed up of the rising cases of chain-snatching and motorcycle robberies in the Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar areas, 400 policemen along with a State Reserve Police (SRP) team surrounded the Irani locality at Ambivali, where the robbers were suspected to be living, at 5am and thoroughly combed the area. The police seized cash and valuables of around Rs 36 lakh, and 41 motorcycles.

The Irani locality, to the west of Ambivali railway station, is infamous for housing robbers and thieves. It is not a favourite area with law enforcers as four years ago, when a police team entered the locality to arrest an accused in a theft and murder case, the residents turned on the police. Five policemen were injured and two residents were killed after the police were forced to open fire to protect themselves.

DCP Hirasingh Jadhav, Kalyan, said, Currently chain-snatching incidents are on the rise in Kalyan, Dombivli, Ulhasnagar and Badlapur. Last week, the police received a tip-off that the thieves were living in Irani locality near Ambivali.”

The police had to meticulously plan their raid on the locality, as during the daytime, the only people seen in the area are children and the elderly. So, the plan was to catch the crooks while they slept.

Jadhav said, “We have arrested 25 accused and seized gold ornaments along with cash of Rs 36 lakh. We have also seized 41 motorcycles, most of them without number plates. With these arrests we hope to crack more cases of chain-snatching and motorcycle theft.”
