A 45-year-old man was found killed in his flat in Mira Road on Friday.
Neighbours discovered the body on the floor of his bedroom, hands and legs bound and mouth gagged.
Mira Road police said the deceased, identified as Deepak Raj a building material supplier, lived in a fourth floor flat at Matoshri Nagar near Bharti Park, with his wife and two children.
Nitin Sambatwad, deputy superintendent of police, Mira Road, said Raj had sent his family to Orissa for the
summer holidays and had been living alone in the flat since Saturday.
One neighbour told police that a carpenter named Inder S, whom Raj had called over, alerted them after his repeated knocks went unanswered.
The neighbours noticed the flat’s safety door partially open, with the main grille closed.
“They went into Raj’s house to check and found him on the floor of his bedroom with his hands and legs tied with a
nylon rope and his mouth gagged with a cloth,” said Sambatwad.
At 12.30 am, the building residents called the police, who suspect Raj may have been killed on Wednesday by a person known to him.
“We found a few half empty beer and whisky bottles on the floor and leftover food on four plates next to the body,” said Sambatwad.
“Raj was wearing a vest and underpants when we found his body, with the air-conditioner and lights still on,” Sambatwad added.
Police have sent the body to Bhagwati Hospital for the post-mortem.
“We did not find any stab wounds on the body, except for an injury on his head. It appears there was more than one person in the house during the murder,” Sambatwad said.
Police have ruled out robbery as the motive since the body was found with a gold ring, chain and wristwatch, and nothing else was missing from the flat.
“We have registered a case of murder against unknown people, and will now question employees of Raj’s firm,” Sambatwad said.
His family was informed in Orissa on Friday.
