Holi celebrations turned sour for 497 people, who were caught driving drunk between Sunday evening and Monday morning. Of the 497 offenders caught, 163 were convicted and sentenced to simple imprisonment on Monday.

Of the 163 convicted motorists, 129 were sent to simple imprisonment until the rising of court for the day.

The traffic police, on Monday, said most of the offenders were motorcyclists.

Of the 497 offenders, 375 were riding two-wheelers and 66 were driving a car in an inebriated state. The traffic police said that 23 motorists were found driving without a valid driving licence.

Of those caught driving drunk, 169 offenders were between 21 and 25 years of age, while 139 were between 26 and 30 years of age.

As one of those caught was a second-time offender for driving drunk, the court suspended his licence for a year and fined him Rs3,000.

In 2010, 16,290 motorists were apprehended for drunk driving, of which 9,543 were sent to simple imprisonment. The licences of 8,354 offenders were suspended last year.
