At least five people have been detained by the Government Railway Police for attacking a family of six, and killing one of them, aboard the Veraval Express at Karjat, on Thursday.
A group of eight men armed with swords and knives had attacked the family, travelling from Pune to Baroda in Gujarat, after they stopped the accused from sexually assaulting the women in their group.
During the attack, Dilip Salat (31) was stabbed to death and his body thrown out of the train.
The incident occurred after the attackers sexually assaulted Mala (25), Dilip’s wife, who is three months pregnant.
The accused later escaped at Kalyan.
According to the railway police, the men have been detained as suspects based on information collected during the investigation.
“We’ve detained the men for further questioning,” said S.S. Dhumal, senior police inspector at Karjat.
Investigations have revealed that one of the accused was injured when the family had tried to resist the attackers.
“We have learnt that he travelled to Ambernath to get treatment. We are questioning the staff of dispensaries and nursing homes to identify him,” said Tukaram Chavan, commissioner of the Government Railway Police.
The police are questioning porters and vendors at railway stations between Lonavla and Kalyan, to identify the other accused. With help from Dilip’s family members, they have made sketches of the attackers and circulated them to all railway police stations on the Central Railway.
