Three men and two minors were arrested, on Friday, for allegedly robbing and murdering a 52-year-old man. Surya Naidu (21), Ganesh Bansode (20), Ravi Chavan (20) and the two minors, both 17-year-olds (names withheld to protect identity) lived in the slums at Dharavi.

On August 5, when Tukaram Gavkar, a Borivli resident was on his way back home, he was assaulted by the accused near the Kataria bridge on Senapati Bapat Marg near Matunga station.

Gavkar was reportedly drunk when he was attacked, said the police.

“The accused who were also drunk attacked the victim and snatched away his mobile phone and Rs 7,000 cash from his shirt-pocket at knife-point,” said a police officer.

“The men then tried to rob him of another Rs 8,000 cash which was kept in his trouser pocket. This lead to a scuffle between the two of them," added the officer.

“The accused then overpowered him and took away the cash before throwing him off the bridge,” said Senior Police Inspector B Pawar of Mahim police station.

The officials said all the accused have criminal records in the past.

The officials said that the accused were arrested based on the information provided by the informers. The minors who have been accused in the case have been sent to the Juvenile Justice Board.
