A 50-year-old woman, a history sheeter who recruited young women to commit robberries, was arrested on October 5.

Gangu Sakat alias Gangubai was arrested with two other women when they were running away with a mobile phone belonging to a student in Dadar.

According to Dadar police, Sakat who has several cases of robbery against her at various police stations, especially in the central area, would offer young women around 50% of the loot.

Assistant Police Inspector, J Sawant from Dadar police station said, “In this case, Sakat, along with Sona Kasbe, 22, and Sabina Nanvatkar, 27, boarded a bus at Agar Bazaar bus stop near the Portuguese church. They targeted Deven Sawant, a college student and pulled out his Nokia 5230 model worth Rs 9,000.”

Another officer on condition of anonymity, said, “After getting a tip off, we managed to nab the accused from near the Magani Industrial Estate in Dadar.”

Elaborating on their modus operandi, the officer added, “The accused would normally enter crowded buses with a small child to evade suspicion. They would first narrow down on the person to be targeted and then surround him/her before making way with the loot.”

The officer said, “We suspect Sakat has more women working for her. We could not interrogate her further as she was sent to judicial custody.”
