As the country was still reeling from the shocking rape of a 5-year-old girl in Delhi, the Mumbai police arrested a senior citizen and a 40-year-old man on the charge of sexually assaulting two minor girls.

Vasant Shivram Aghane, 63, was arrested by the Worli police on Saturday after his maid accused him of molesting her nine-year-old daughter in his Worli flat. “On the day of the incident, the maid took her daughter along to work. While she was away, the accused took her daughter to the bedroom and molested her,” said Nitin Chavan, investigating officer. “The victim complained to the mother of pain and after seeing the injuries, the mother came to us.”

A medical examination at Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, revealed bite marks on the girl’s right chest. Her mother told cops that her daughter has also been touched in her private parts, said Chavan. Police said that the accused would often play with the victim as she would regularly accompany her mother to his house and they are now investigating if she was molested on previous occasions too.

In the second case, Child Line, a non-profit organisation, learnt that a six-year-old girl was molested on a footpath in Mumbai Central on Saturday. According to sources from Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, where the victim was admitted, the accused Jitu Patel was sleeping “naked” next to the victim and tried touching her private parts. When locals noticed this, he was taken to the police station where he was let off with a warning.

A volunteer from Child Line counselled the victim and took her to Nair Hospital. Later, when the parents, along with the volunteer, went to Nagpada police station, they were dissuaded from lodging a complaint as the medical examination did not show any injuries. However, a complaint was filed and Patel was arrested. Cops say that the accused was known to the victim’s father.

Refuting the delay in filing the complaint, VB Deshmukh, deputy commissioner of police, Zone 3, said “We immediately registered the complaint.”
