Seven people drowned off the Ganpatipule beach in Ratnagiri district on Saturday evening.

Officials at the local Jaigad police station said that three bodies were fished out with the help of the fire brigade. However, four others are still missing and a search operation is underway.

According to the police, the seven people were members of three different groups who had come there for a picnic. The incident took place at around 6:30 pm, when some of them ventured deep into the sea, near the famous Ganpati temple.

An officer from the Jaigad police station said, “We managed to retrieve bodies of three boys, who are in the age group of 26 to 30.”

The deceased were identified as Vinayak Rangapure, Amit Sole (both from Solapur) and Sanga Avle of New Panvel near Mumbai.

Tushar Patil, deputy superintendent of police, Ganpatipule said, “We ascertained their identity with the help of the other group members. The four others who are missing are all men.”

The Jaigad police have registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident and a probe is underway.
