A British girl, on vacation with her family at Matheran, died after she fell off the horse she was riding.
The police said the victim, seven-year-old India Gavin Mathew, was dragged for around 100m after she fell off.
The police said the family came to the hill station on Monday. On Tuesday, Gavin Mathew, his wife Teressa, and their four children had hired horses for sightseeing. “Around 4.30pm, the horse that India was on started running. Their guide could not control the horse,” said RM Khebude, police sub inspector, Matheran police station.
“Within a few minutes, the girl fell off the horse, but her legs got stuck in the saddle. She was dragged for around 100m. India’s father told us her horse was moving just behind his,” Khebude said.
Locals managed to stop the horse and the girl was taken to a civic hospital, but doctors said she had already died. The postmortem was done in JJ Hospital.
The girl’s parents want to take her body back to Britain for the last rites. “Initial medical reports show the victim died of head injuries. We are helping the family get back home,” another police officer said.
