A 75-year-old woman was found dead on Thursday morning in her apartment on VP Road in south Mumbai. The police said the incident came to light after the elderly woman’s house help arrived around 11am and did not get a response to the doorbell. Police have registered a case of accidental death in connection with the incident and have sent her body for a post-mortem.

The VP Road police said Sarla Vasudevan lived at the apartment alone and her nephews used to visit her occasionally. She had been divorced a few years ago and had no children.

On Thursday morning, when she failed to respond to the doorbell, the maid informed the neighbours. After they broke open the door, they found Vasudevan lying motionless on the floor of her apartment in Amritwadi Building.

Shrikant Desai, inspector of VP Road police station, said, “There was no sign of anybody entering as the door was locked from inside and had to be broken open and that there were no external injury marks found on her body. We are, however, yet to ascertain if anything is missing from the house.” The police sent Vasudevan's body to JJ hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.

Vasudevan was last seen on Wednesday night by neighbours and was not spotted at the water tap the next morning where the residents gather to fill water. The officials are awaiting her autopsy reports to ascertain cause of death and are probing all angles in the case.
