A 78-year-old woman died while a 40-year-old domestic help was injured when a slab of a three-storeyed cessed building in Zoroastrian Colony, Tardeo, collapsed on Tuesday morning.
The Gamdevi police said that the bedroom slab of the second-floor apartment of 100-year-old Soona building caved in at around 10am, leading to the death of Humayun Barucha, and injuring a domestic help identified as Veena.
Sudhir Dalvi, assistant inspector of Gamdevi police station, said, “Barucha was resting in her bedroom when the floor gave way. Veena, who was working in the kitchen on the first floor, sustained injuries on the neck after the debris crashed on her. The first floor could not hold the weight, and collapsed, too.”
Barucha was declared dead on arrival after she was rushed to Bhatia hospital along with Veena. Soona building is part of a cluster of 23 buildings in Zoroastrian Colony which are managed by the Zoroastrian Building Fund Estate.
“The Barucha family had written to the trustees in March stating that the building needs immediate repair, but no action was taken,” a neighbour said.
The Gamdevi police have registered a case of accidental death, and further probe is underway.
