An 83-year-old woman, Diwali Jain, was robbed of her gold chain and pushed to the ground by two unidentified passengers in an autorickshaw in Borivli.
Jain fractured her leg in the incident and is expected to be bedridden for at least three months.
The incident occurred around 6.30 am on August 4 when Jain was walking alone to the Jain mandir, a few metres from her residence.
She told the police that a rickshaw approached from the front and after slowing down next to her, one of the unidentified passengers leaned out and snatched the 20 gram gold chain worth Rs50,000 from around her neck and sped towards Daulat Nagar.
Pankaj, her grandson, said “The man also pushed my grandmother to the ground before fleeing. Two passers-by informed us of the incident She had bruises on her forehead and a fracture on her left thigh.”
A police officer said, “Jain could not see the registration number of the vehicle. There were very few people around that early in the morning. We will catch the accused soon.”
