9-year-old girl’s body found in police quarters in Mumbai

Tension prevailed in Kurla, Mumbai after the body of a nine-year-old schoolgirl, allegedly raped and murdered, was found on the terrace of the police quarters, opposite the Nehru Nagar police station on Sunday morning.

Post-mortem reports to confirm rape and the cause of death are awaited. Five persons have been detained for questioning.

Following the discovery of the body, a mob of around 3,000 people gheraoed the Nehru Nagar police station, demanding that the perpetrators be arrested.

About a month ago, a five-year-old girl was raped and murdered in an under-construction building.

The victim, Ankita (name changed), a class four student, lived with her parents and five-year-old brother at Ali Dada Estate in Kurla (East), about a km away from the spot where the body was found.

According to the Nehru Nagar police, the incident came to light around 10 am. "The body was found on the terrace of building number 109. There were no injury marks on her," said Dilip Sawant, deputy commissioner of police, Zone VI.

The family had registered a missing complaint early Sunday morning.

The girl's father told HT that Ankita had returned home from tuitions at 7.30 pm and left to play for a bit.

The police have registered a murder case and suspect the act to be the handiwork of somebody who was known to the victim.
