The initial post-mortem report of the nine-year-old girl, whose body was found in a hut at Nehru Nagar on Saturday, has confirmed that she was raped and strangulated.
The sequence of events, however, is still unclear.
This is the third such case in the area in four months. The girl’s decomposed body was found in an empty hit at Vatsalatai Nagar slum in Nehru Nagar on Saturday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Trombay division) Jalinder Khandagle and the local police suspect the same person committed the murders. “We are waiting for the detailed medical reports to ascertain whether the girl was killed after the rape or before,” said Khandagle.
On Sunday night, Home Minister R.R. Patil visited the spot where the body was found.
The police have recorded statements of the previous and the existing owners of the hut in which the body was found. Arshad Hasan Khatri had bought the hut from Draupadi Sakharam Patil, in March. Sources said Khatri, who lives in Santacruz, told the police that the house has been vacant since
“On Saturday, when he reached the house he found the lock on the main door intact. The accused might have entered using a duplicate key or through a duct on the roof,” Khandagle said. The police are questioning key-makers for clues, Khandagle said.
The police have, meanwhile, closed all carom clubs and video parlours in the locality and are keeping a watch on people who have recently moved out of Nehru Nagar.
The police have released a coloured version of the sketch they prepared on April 28 based on the description given by a nine-year-old girl who had managed to escape from a kidnapper who molested her.
At least 800 policemen from across the city are combing the area. The police have detained 12 people for questioning and have conducted DNA tests on more than 70 men after the body of a six-year-old girl was found on the terrace of a nearby building on February 7.
