A nine-year-old mentally challenged girl was raped in Chembur on Friday and the police arrested one of two alleged rapists - a 27-year-old labourer - on Saturday. The other accused is absconding. The child was allegedly raped in her house in the slums in the area.
According to police, the incident took place when the victim was alone at home as her parents had gone to work. The accused Gorakh Dinkar along with an accomplice, who has not yet been identified, allegedly forced entry into the house late in the afternoon and took turns to rape the girl.
The police suspect that the arrested accused, who resides in the same area as the victim, may have observed that the victim was alone at home during the day and took advantage of the situation. "The accused resides in the same locality and may have seen the victim alone earlier too. The victim's parents work at a nearby private company," police inspector P Dharia from RCF police station said.
The victim's parents learnt about the incident from their neighbours when they returned from work. The girl was later admitted to the Rajawadi hospital for medical check-up.
According to the RCF police, the victim's neighbours rushed to her hutment when they heard her scream. However, by then the accused had fled the spot. Based on the information gathered, the police arrested Dinkar. The police are still on the lookout for his accomplice, police said.
The accused have been booked under sections 376 (rape) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 34 (common intention).
