Actor Amitabh Bachchan on Thursday said the controversy over his presence at the inauguration of the second carriageway of the Bandra-Worli sea link had been “manufactured”.

Some Mumbai Congress leaders were upset with Bachchan’s presence because he is the brand ambassador of Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Gujarat and his relationship with the Gandhi family has been strained. Bachchan said he was invited by a minister.

Deputy CM Chhagan Bhujbal said the Nationalist Congress Party had invited Bachchan.

“He is a famous personality and attends so many functions. So what if he attended the government function?”

Bachchan said those who object to his association with Gujarat do not have the courage to stop “a Ratan Tata or an Ambani” from investing in the state.

“Reason and common sense overrides all else in moments like this. Such a shame,” he said.

Bachchan said the media has been “hounding” him “through incessant SMSes”.

Bhujbal said that Bachchan had also been invited to the Marathi Literary meet in Pune. Chavan has also been invited to the meet.

Mumbai Congress chief, Kripashankar Singh, said he had conveyed his feelings to the party high command.

Bachchan, meanwhile, said there was no politics to his role as Gujarat’s brand ambassador.
