If it is global warming for Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar’s birthday on Saturday, it is a Peshwa-style set up for Gopinath Munde’s daughter’s wedding on Friday.
These are the themes for two of the biggest events in political circles this weekend and Pune will be the epicentre of the hoopla.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), keeping in line with the Copenhagen climate change summit, has announced that it will incorporate the climate change theme to celebrate the NCP chief’s birthday on December 12.
“We have asked all party workers in the state to spread word of awareness on climate change on Saturday. This is the first time a political party has incorporated such a theme in celebrations,” said NCP Spokesperson Madan Bafna.
Promotions will be done through banners and distribution of CDs of films on environment awareness. But the highlight will be party workers taking an oath to protect the environment from getting polluted.
Pawar shares his birthday with Munde, general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Munde’s birthday celebrations will coincide with an important occasion, the wedding of his daughter Dr Pritam Munde. The who’s who of the state and country are expected to attend the wedding. BJP sources said the wedding would be held at Shivaji Preparatory Military School grounds that can accommodate at least 35,000. The ground is being decorated to resemble a grand royal Maratha wedding, just like those that took place in the times of Maratha warrior Shivaji.
