The autorickshaw driver arrested for allegedly raping a five-year old girl at Aarey Colony seems to have no remorse. In fact, Shivkumar Rana, 30, defended himself saying he was drunk at the time.
“I was under the influence of alcohol. I don’t know why I did it,” he told officers of the Mumbai crime branch on Tuesday.
He was produced in the court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody till March 18.
Rana, who is from Jharkhand, is married and also has a two-year old son. He was arrested by the unit 10 of Mumbai crime branch for allegedly kidnapping the child from Sahar area and raping her at an isolated place on March 1.
After scrutinising CCTV footage, the Sahar police and crime branch started looking for an autorickshaw with a yellow hood.
On Saturday, police constable Ajit Patil from unit 10 was walking at Marol Naka around 7.30pm when he spotted an autorickshaw with a yellow hood and a black patch on it. He ran behind the vehicle and managed to note down the registration number, which was then sent to various police units.
On Monday, police constables Sunil Tawade and Sadanand Parab caught Rana at Sahar Road. “We showed him the CCTV footage. He said although the man resembled him, he didn’t remember committing the crime,” an officer said. However, he later confessed he was drunk and when he saw the child alone, he asked her to get in the auto.
“Rana says he doesn’t know why he kidnapped and raped the girl. He says he was drunk,” said PA Satam, police inspector, unit 10.
