The mother of the nine-year-old boy, who was kidnapped and released on Wednesday, has not responded to police summons for her statement.
On Tuesday, the boy was picked up from outside his school in Malad and then dropped near his residence three hours later.
The police’s attempts to summon the mother and record her statement have failed.
“Immediately after the boy was returned to his mother, the woman locked her house and left. We are trying to contact her,” said M. Telang, senior police inspector of Bangur Nagar police station.
“We assume that financial or family dispute is the motive behind the kidnapping,” said an officer. “The kidnappers must have abandoned the plan of kidnapping the boy and released him on learning that the police had been alerted.”
The police have registered a kidnapping case and are in a process of recording the statements of the boy’s father whom his mother had divorced five years ago.
The police will also record the statements of the woman’s family and friends to find out whether a past rivalry is the motive behind the abduction.
The kidnappers forced him into a white car and drove through Malad and Goregaon for a few hours. They also offered him ice cream and snacks and behaved politely.
Along the way, one of the accused stopped at a telephone booth and called the boys mother for ransom amount.
The mother rushed to the police station to file a complaint but when was in the process of recording her statement, the boy was released.
