Navi Mumbai police failed to make any headway in the Abu Salem attack case on Saturday as it is yet to get the custody of the accused Devendra Baburao Jagtap alias JD. Police say they should get the custody on Sunday.

Explaining the reason for the delay in getting Jagtap’s custody, Navi Mumbai additional commissioner of police Fattehsingh Patil said, “We had approached Panvel sessions court yesterday seeking the custody of the accused. However, it cannot grant custody as Jagtap has been remanded in jail by the Mumbai sessions court.”

He added, “The Panvel court has asked the Mumbai court for custody as we cannot do so directly. The order has come and we will probably get his custody tomorrow.”

On the progress of the case, Patil said, “Since we have not yet got the official custody of the accused, we have not been able to interrogate him. Once we get him, I am sure a lot of things will become clear.”

Asked if there had been any informal questioning, Patil said, “It is not proper to repeatedly conduct informal inquiry as we do not have the official custody of the accused. Hence we have decided to wait for a day.”

Jagtap has been giving varied versions of the incident and taking names to Chhota Chakeel and Chhota Rajan at different times.
