Mohammed Mehndi Hassan, an undertrial in the 1995 murder of builder Pradeep Jain, suffered injuries on his face and hand in the attack with a sharp-edged weapon and was undergoing treatment in the jail hospital, prison officials said.

The four prisoners allegedly involved in the incident are members of the notorious Pandav Putra gang and were facing extortion and robbery charges, the officials said.

The assault on Hassan comes two months after Salem, extradited from Portugal five years ago to face trial, was injured in an attack by Mustafa Dossa, a close aide of fugitive underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, in the jail.

However, no case has been registered yet in the latest incident. "We are recording Hassan's statement after which we would decide our next step," a senior jail official said.

Hassan is said to be a former driver of Salem, an accused in the 1993 serial bomb blasts in Mumbai.

After the July 24 assault, Salem was shifted to Taloja Jail in Navi Mumbai, while Dossa was moved to Thane Central Prison.
