Abhijeet Kurne, son of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Protection Branch) Madhusudan Kurne, waited for at least two hours after he shot his 21-year-old wife in the head and then killed himself, police said on Saturday.
Post mortem reports have revealed that the 27-year-old, shot himself two hours after killing his wife, Ashwini, with his father’s .38 bore service revolver on Friday morning.
The post mortem reports said Abhijeet allegedly shot Ashwini around 2 am, while he died at around 5 am.
“Abhijeet may have been contemplating his next step after realising the gravity of what he had done,” said a police officer requesting anonymity. Additional Commissioner of Police (North) Ramrao Pawar confirmed the two-hour gap between the two deaths.
Abhijeet’s parents and brother discovered the bodies in one of the bedrooms of their Malad flat.
Abhijeet took the revolver from his father’s cupboard on Thursday night when he opened it on the pretext of removing some documents.
The police have taken fingerprints to ascertain if Abhijeet had fired the two rounds. They have registered a case of murder against Abhijeet.
The Malad police said they were investigating reports that Abhijeet suspected Ashwini of having an extra-marital affair, but added that it was too early to comment.
Abhijeet and Ashwini were cousins and got married in February with their families’ consent.
A police officer from Malad, requesting anonymity said ACP Kurne, who had three sons, treated Ashwini very well. “He would hand over his monthly salary to Ashwini first,” the officer said.
