A self-proclaimed activist and promoter of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority housing scheme was shot at on Wednesday afternoon, close to Agripada police station. The two assailants fired one round, which missed their target, and fled.

Police said the victim, Ismail Shah, was sitting at an Udupi hotel close to Agripada police station when the incident took place. The two men came close and fired one shot each at him, which missed and hit a refrigerator.

Nisar Tamboli, deputy commissioner of police, detection said the bullet was recovered from the spot. "Investigations are on to trace the two accused," said Tamboli.

Shah and his family stay in the 'Elite Residency', an SRA building above the hotel at Agripada. His wife and sister reached the spot immediately after the incident. Shah's family believes a builder, with whom Shah had a long running dispute, carried out the shooting.

The builder had been trying to evict the residents allotted apartments under SRA scheme, so that he could sell them.

"Shah and others have been fighting against him for a long time," his sister, Shahida Azgar said. She added that they had filed a case against the builder that has been going on in the sessions court for the last eight years.
