Bollywood actor couple Ashutosh Rana and Renuka Shahane woke up on Tuesday morning to discover that their Mitsubishi Pajero had been stolen from right under their noses: It was driven out of their Yari Road building compound.
The couple filed a complaint at Versova police station immediately after the watchman of the building, Leela Apartments, alerted them about the theft of their red-and-white SUV.
“The watchman came and asked us if our driver had taken the Pajero out. When we said he hadn’t, the watchman said it was not in the parking lot,” Shahane said.
“We have registered a case of theft against an unidentified person,” said KMM Prasanna, deputy commissioner of police (zone 9).
He suggests that the housing society should have been more careful. “There are two gates in the building. While a watchman manned one gate, the second gate was open and unmanned. If there are two gates and only one is manned, the other gate should be locked. This is a basic precaution any society should take,” Prasanna pointed out.
Shahane feels a highly professional gang, which kept a check on the movements of the building staff, is behind the theft. “The building gate is locked at night so the thieves must have opened the lock and used a key to drive away with our Pajero,” she said.
The actor suspects that the vehicle may have been stolen between 3.20am and 6am, as a neighbour remembers seeing it at 3.20am and the watchman sensed something was amiss at 6 am when the car cleaner inquired whether the driver had taken the Pajero out.
“We don’t know if our Pajero is in Maharashtra or has been taken to neighbouring Gujarat or any other state,” said Shahane, admitting that she now wishes they had installed a censor alarm. “I had gifted the Pajero to Ranaji on his birthday in 2007. We’re both emotionally attached to it.”
The building staff was summoned to the police station fro questioning and were cooperative, she said.
