Aftab Manzil’s foundation not tampered with: BMC probe

Seeking to lay the blame of the collapse onto residents of the ill-fated Aftab Manzil, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now hinting at activities carried out by residents and not illegal alterations were the reason behind the structure's collapse.

This marks an about-turn by the civic body, which had earlier initiated a probe into allegations of illegal alterations done by commercial occupants at the basement and ground floor of the building.

Civic officials have said that its probe has found that the structure's foundational pillars were intact and had not been tampered with, as alleged by residents.

According to the interim probe still underway, the residents had added a load to the building by adding extra flooring without removing the existing one.

While the interim report of the probe conducted by private structural consultant Shashank Mehendale is expected soon, civic officials privately said that the report points to negligence by residents, rather than commercial occupants of a car showroom on the ground floor, as alleged by residents.

However, activists and experts are not convinced. “Earlier, the BMC blamed the rains and cement for the collapse.

Now it is addition of load by the residents. This blame game is only to protect and shelter the corrupt officers of the BMC. The Corporation itself appears to be hand in glove with these corrupt officers,” advocate Rizwan Merchant said.

A part of the five storeyed Aftab Manzil had collapsed on June 10, killing ten and injuring at least seven persons.
