With cold conditions prevailing in the northern part of the country, the minimum temperatures in the city have been below normal for more than a week now and are expected to go down further over the weekend.
This month, Mumbai witnessed several chilly nights as a chain of western disturbances (an extra-tropical storm that brings sudden rain and snow in northern India) affected the climate in the city too.
For more than a week now, the minimum temperature in the city has been below normal between 14 and 15 degrees Celsius.
“We observed that the penetration of cold winds blowing from the north towards the west and southern peninsula has increased. This might have reduced the fluctuation in the minimum temperature across the state,” said NY Apte, deputy director-general, India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The city witnessed the coldest day this month – 10.4 degrees Celsius, recorded on January 6. It was also the third coldest January day in a decade.
On Thursday, the minimum temperature at Santacruz was 15 degrees Celsius and at Colaba it was 19 degrees Celsius. The maximum temperature at Santacruz was 29 degrees Celsius and at Colaba it was 28 degrees Celsius.
IMD officials said the mercury will drop over the weekend, “A western disturbance is expected to pass over Jammu and Kashmir in the next two days,” said VK Rajeev, director, IMD, western region.
