The Sion police on Thursday arrested the driver of the school bus from which Class 3 student, Viraj Parmar, put his head out and was fatally hit by a hoarding.
Soon after the accident, driver Sundar had fled from the spot fearing agitation from the locals.
The police had arrested Dinesh Prajapati, 24, the cleaner of the bus, on Wednesday. “We have added the names of the owner of the hoarding along with a manager of Shri Vallabhashram School based on the family’s statement. We will investigate if there was any negligence on the part of the school manager or the hoarding owner,” said sub inspector Tukaram Adavatkar, Sion police station.
The police also arrested five persons belonging to a political outfit that came to protest in the school premises. Around 10 persons entered the school office and broke a telephone.
Govt calls for urgent review of school bus policy
In an urgent meeting called by the state education department on Thursday morning, education minister Rajendra Darda decided to take a review on the issue of safety of school buses. spelled out in the state.
Under the school bus policy that came into effect this year, school buses must have trained drivers and woman attendants, install safety grilles, carry a list of students and their blood groups, and run at a speed limit of 40-50 kmph.
“We need to devise a system to asses if each bus follows the rules set in the policy,” Darda told HT.
