A six-year-old girl from Mahim was allegedly raped by a neighbour on Monday evening. The suspect, who is still at large, is a neighbour of the victim, a class 1 student, and would often get chocolates for her, police said.

The incident occurred just a day after a six-year-old girl was kidnapped and raped in Govandi on Sunday night.

The Mahim incident came to light around 7pm on Monday evening, when the victim Saira's (name changed) younger sister, who had gone to a religious learning centre in the locality, returned home.

When she asked her mother why Saira had not accompanied her to the centre like she used to every day, her mother was shocked, as she assumed her daughters were together, said an officer from Shahu Nagar police station on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

They immediately began looking for Saira, and found her an hour-and-a-half later in a semi conscious condition near the bushes adjacent to the railway lines in Mahim. "Saira appeared to be in shock, and fell unconscious when she saw her mother," the police said.

"When she regained consciousness, she said that a neighbour called Abdul had taken her to the bushes where he unclothed her. She did not recollect what happened later," said inspector G Desurkar of Shahu Nagar police station. The police refused to release the full name of Abdul, who they said was between 25-30 years old, and sells imitation jewellery in local trains.

A woman residing in the neighbourhood, who did not wish to be identified, said: "I would often see Abdul giving chocolates to girls from our locality. It seemed like a good gesture then, but now we know why he did that."

The victim who studies at a local municipal school resides with her four siblings - two sisters and two brothers - and parents. She is currently recuperating at the JJ Hospital. Her father is a painter.

Desurkar said they were hopeful of tracking Abdul down soon. A case of rape and kidnapping has been registered against him at Shahu Nagar police station.
