Umaid Ishrat Sheikh should have known better than to leave one of his two wives behind when he fled Mumbra, after allegedly ordering the killing of Arif Zaveri, the driver of fugitive don Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar.

Sources said Umaid’s first wife (name withheld to protect identity), angry that he chose to take his second wife along and leave her behind, has given the police a lot of clues on where her husband could have possibly fled.

She has given the police the registration number of the car in which the couple fled the city, immediately after Tuesday’s shootout on Pakmodia Street.

Also a resident of Mumbra, she is currently in the custody of the crime branch, which picked her up for questioning.

Information shared by two of the four assassins, who shot Zaveri down but failed to escape, during interrogation led the police to Umaid, who is a close aide of Chhota Rajan and had a property dispute with Zaveri.

Shooters miss second target
Crime branch sources revealed that apart from Zaveri, one more person was meant to be shot, but he had not been present at the spot at the time of the shooting.

“We are sure Iqbal Kaskar was not their target. We know who it is, but we cannot disclose more at this point,” said a senior crime branch officer, on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media. “Their contact had brought the shooters to Pakmodia Street and shown them the people who were to be targeted.”
