The Special Investigation Team (SIT), probing into the 2006 alleged fake encounter case of Ram Narayan Gupta, arrested an inspector who had allegedly fired a round on the alleged Chhota Rajan aide.

Arvind Sarvankar is the 20th accused to be arrested in the case in which inspector Pradeep Sharma is also a key accused. Sarvankar, who was absconding and was declared a proclaimed offender by the court, was arrested on Friday.

The SIT also arrested an alleged small-time criminal Suresh Shetty in connection with the case. Deputy commissioner of police and head of the SIT KMM Prassana confirmed both the arrests.

In a related development, the sessions court recently granted bail to two more police officials accused in the encounter killing.

The court granted bail to police sub-inspector Ganesh Harpude and police constable Ganpat Kokam.

Till date, five of the 20 accused arrested in this case have been released on bail.

Sub-inspector Anand Patade, and constables Devi Das Sakpal and constable Sunil Solanki were earlier granted bail.

Lakkhan Bhaiya was killed in an alleged fake encounter on November 11, 2006 near Nana-Nani Park in Versova.

However, advocate Ram Prasad Gupta, on November 15, 2006, moved a petition in the Bombay High Court alleging that his brother was murdered by the police officials.

The Bombay High Court, in February 2008, ordered a magisterial inquiry into the alleged encounter.

In August 2009 the magistrate submitted the report to the high court saying that Lakkhan Bhaiya was killed in “cold-blooded murder”.

Later, the high court formed SIT to probe into the alleged fake encounter case.

The SIT on January 8, arrested Sharma, while senior inspector PradeepSuryawanshi, who allegedly lead the team of police officers on the encounter day, was arrested on March 4.

The SIT has filed charge sheet against 19 accused in the case.
