Less than four days ago, a 73-year-old woman was murdered in her Malad house by an ex-employee; two days ago, a robber broke into a Bandra flat and raped a Spanish woman at knifepoint.
The accused slashed Kama-laben Thakkar’s throat thrice and also tried to throttle her, the police said. She has been admitted to the ICU at Sapna Healthcare on LBS Marg and is said to be out of danger.
The police suspect robbery to be the motive behind the attack.
The incident took place after 2pm in Thakkar’s second-floor flat at Vivek society in Sainath Nagar, Ghatkopar (West). Aro-und 1.30pm, a carpenter came to Thakkar’s flat, an officer investigating the case said. “She had called him to repair a trolley. The maid saw the carpenter, but she left at 2pm while he was still there,” he said.
The police suspect the carpenter was waiting for the maid to go. Thakkar’s husband passed away two years ago, and her two daughters and son, who live in the city, are married, said Ram Mandurke, senior inspector, Ghatkopar police station. The attack came to light around 4pm, when an office boy sent by her son, Paresh, arrived at the flat and repeatedly knocked on the door. Thakkar regained consciousness and managed to open the door. The police hope to make an arrest soon.
