A 28-year-old man allegedly stabbed himself to death in front of his family after an argument between him and his brother on Monday.
The deceased, Arjun Ahire, was a resident of Pokri Aagar area of Antop Hill where he resided with his mother and elder brother.
According to the police, the brothers were unemployed and Arjun was an alcoholic, while the only source of income in the house was their mother’s meagre earnings as a house help.
This led to frequent quarrels between Arjun and his brother. Often, the duo’s mother would take control of the situation and Arjun started thinking his mother only supported his brother.
On Monday afternoon, Arjun again got into an argument with his brother. In a fit of rage, he picked up a knife and started chasing his brother in their house premises when Arjun’s mother intervened and reprimanded them for being unemployed and creating a ruckus all the time.
“Arjun probably thought his mother was again supporting his brother. He accused his mother of singling him saying she never said anything to his brother following which he stabbed himself in the abdomen. The panic-stricken family sought help from neighbours and rushed Arjun to Sion Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival,” said Shamsher Pathan, senior inspector of Antop Hill police station.
Based on the statements of family members and the neighbours, who confirmed frequent tiffs in the Ahire family, the police registered a case of accidental death.
