A driver employed by Bollywood’s famous Khan family (Salim-Salman-Arbaaz-Sohail Khan) allegedly rammed a Toyota Lexus car into a 70-year-old pavement dweller at Bandra on Sunday night, killing her.

Around 10 years ago, one pavement dweller was killed and four others injured in a similar accident involving actor Salman Khan.

The Lexus involved in Sunday’s accident belonged to Salman’s sibling, actor and producer Arbaaz Khan, the police said. The only person present in the car was the driver, they said. He was arrested and subsequently released on bail on Monday after paying a surety amount of Rs. 10,000, they added. The incident took place around 10.45pm on Sunday near St Andrews church at Bandra (West).

Deputy commissioner of police (zone 9) Pratap Dighavkar said that Dhananjay Pimple, 46, the driver, had left Salman Khan’s Carter Road residence around 10.30pm. He was to pick up Sohail Khan from his Khar residence.

“Around 200 metres away, Pimple realised that he had forgotten a bag containing his umbrella and tiffin box in Salman’s house. So he took an illegal U-turn near St Andrew’s Church to go back,” said Dighavkar. “While doing so, he crossed over to the other side and ended up running over an elderly woman.”

The deceased, Chandana Bala, a pavement dweller, was rushed to the Bhabha hospital, where she was declared dead.

Pimple fled from the spot in the car when a crowd began to gather, Dighavkar said.

More than an hour later, he surrendered at the Bandra police station.
