Left-wing cultural organisation Safdar Hashmi Memorial Trust on Thursday spoke out in support of actor Shah Rukh Khan and his latest film, My Name Is Khan.

“We the community of artists, musicians, actors, writers, academics and cultural artists are in full solidarity with the clear stand taken by Shah Rukh Khan in facing up to the recent threats by Shiv Sena,” said a statement released by SAHMAT.

The statement went on to chastise the state for “always capitulat[ing] to these forces instead of confronting them head on”.

“We call upon citizens to come out in defence of the cinema houses screening [Shah Rukh Khan’s] films,” said the statement, signed by, among others, actor M.K. Riana and painter Vivian Sunderam.
