One person was killed and three others were injured while crossing railway tracks at Virar station on Friday evening.

The four people were crossing the tracks instead of using the foot over bridge to board a Vapi-bound train which was on another platform, said Vasai Government Railway Police (GRP). The Vasai GRP has registered a case of accidental death.

Suresh Chavan, senior police inspector of Vasai GRP said, “The four commuters were run over by the Firozpur Janata Express between platforms 3 and 4.” Dinkar Patil, 56, from Palghar, was declared dead whereas Mohammed Salim Aziz Khatri, 21, from Dahanu, Vijay Raut, 45, from Borivli and Vijay Singh, 17, from Palghar are recuperating at the Sanjivani Hospital in Virar.

“The incident took place around 4.45 pm. All four passengers wanted to board the Vapi Passenger train that was coming on platform no.3. However it was diverted from platform no 3 to 4. Since the foot over bridge was crowded, the four decided to cross the tracks.

They however failed to see the Firozpur Janata Express that was heading towards,” said an officer from Vasai GRP on condition of anonymity, because he is not authorised to talk to the media.
