The Amboli police on Saturday night arrested the driver of the security agency who allegedly stole the cash that was being transported for automated teller machines.

Praveen Belokar (28) was detained from an Andheri (East) hospital on Friday evening when he went there to meet his pregnant wife.

He had allegedly fled to Buldhana and hidden the cash there before returning to the city on Friday.

“Bolekar has been arrested and we have recovered a major part of the booty from Buldhana. He will be produced in court on Monday,” said KMM Prasanna, deputy commissioner of police (zone IX).

Bolekar, the driver of Brink’s Arya, which transports cash for banks across the city, left its office at Andheri with Rs 85 lakh. After depositing the money in about three ATMs, they reached the ATM of ABN Amro Bank at Infinity Mall in Andheri.

When the two cashiers and the security guard went inside to deposit Rs 10 lakh, Bolekar drove away the vehicle and abandoned it near Mega Mall in Oshiwara after stealing Rs 40 lakh, the police said. The police had recovered Rs 35 lakh cash from the vehicle, while Rs 40 lakh was missing.

Sources said the police had deployed a woman constable in civil dress at the hospital to keep a watch as they expected Bolekar to come to see his wife. A police team reached the hospital immediately and took the accused into custody

After Bolekar was detained, he told the police that he had been kidnapped by some people and was taken to an unknown place. They later took the cash and freed him, he said.

The police refused to believe his theory. Later, Bolekar confessed to his crime.
