Taking no chances after an Indian Mujahideen operative was killed recently in Pune’s Yerawada jail, the state anti-terrorism squad (ATS) has increased the security cover of another IM terrorist, Mohammed Kafeel Ansari, who is being questioned at the agency’s Kalachowkie unit for his alleged role in last year’s July 13 triple blasts in the city.

Qateel Siddique, accused of trying to plant a bomb at Dagduseth Halwai temple in Pune, was killed by two inmates in the high-security cell of the jail on June 8.

An ATS official said that Kafeel and Siddique are from the same IM module from Darbhanga. “Kafeel is in ATS’ custody in connection with the 13/7 blasts. He was first arrested by the Delhi special cell and later transferred to the ATS, which arrested him on May 19,” the official said.

Kafeel ranks high in IM’s Darbhanga module and used to brainwash those who were newly recruited by Yasin Bhatkal, one of the key leaders of the terror group. “Considering his position, we do not want to take chances as any harm to him would seriously dent the image of the state in the eyes of the Delhi police,” the official said.

Kafeel was arrested for aiding and abetting IM members and also for providing logistical support for the 13/7 blasts. He played a key role in the blasts at Chinaswamy stadium in Bangalore, said ATS officials.

“Kafeel is one of the main conspirators and knows all the top IM leaders. He is also aware of all the conspiracies and blasts that the IM has orchestrated,” the official said, adding his arrest will throw further light on the 13/7 conspiracy.

Kafeel also knows IM founders Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal, who are holed up in Pakistan,” the official said, adding that he is also likely to give information on new IM members in Bihar. “Kafeel has been with Yasin since 2007 and has been one of the most active members of the IM,” the official said. Officials said Kafeel had a cycle repair shop in Darbhanga and was introduced to Yasin by Gehur Jamali, a key IM operative from Darbhnaga.
