Attack on activist: City expresses shock, anger

mumbai Updated: Jan 10, 2010 01:35 IST

Mumbaiites have reacted with outrage to the attack outside activist Nayana Kathpalia’s house on Friday.

“The attack is further evidence of the link between criminals and the builder/developer mafia that is ruining Mumbai’s quality of life.

“Citizens tackling city problems have to face the underworld,” read a statement issued by prominent citizens including former top cops Julio Riberio and R H Mendonca, former bureaucrats like Sanjay Ubale and D M Sukthankar and former judge BN Srikrishna, and 13 others.

“This morning’s attack on a courageous lady must inspire all citizens to enlist in the fight to save our great city. Such miscreants and their masters must be warned that public-spirited individuals like Kathpalia will not be cowed,” said author and activist Gerson da Cunha.

Former municipal commissioner D.M. Sukthankar said the incident could not have occurred without the complicity of those who have high monetary stakes like slum redevelopers, land mafia and even the higher-ups in the government. The level to which they can stoop is absolutely shocking,” said Sukhtankar.
