Placing a sticker to hide the registration number of their getaway car proved to be a bad move for the two men who tried to kidnap the 10-year-old boy on Friday.

Locals, who had watched the car drive away from the building at Paranjpe Colony in Vile Parle (East), had told the police that they could not see the last digit on the number plate clearly — it either read MH 04 ES 6832 or MH 04 ES 6838.

Armed with the knowledge that a white Xylo with a fudged number plate would be carrying the accused Rohit Divakar, 27, and Milind Waradkar,35, policemen in the area started a search.

When the car reached close to the Oberoi splendour junction on the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road, it was stopped at a nakabandi manned by senior inspector Bhimrao Jadhav of Meghwadi police station and inspector Jitendra Kamble.

“We saw that the vehicle had the registration number MH 04 ES 6832 and stopped it,” said Jadhav. “But when I ran my hand over the last digit and I could feel the sticky residue from a sticker had been obviously just been ripped off.”

The police could not find the boy in the vehicle. “When pressed, they confessed to the crime,” said Jadhav.

The police said the accused had been planning the crime for six days and had also attempted to kidnap the boy on Thursday.
