A former employee of a Virar-based developer and his accomplice were tracked down and arrested on Tuesday after their failed attempt to gun down the builder and their subsequent escape on a bike were captured on closed circuit television camera (CCTV).

While builder Kuldeep Choudhary, 27, escaped unhurt, his friend was shot in the leg.

Choudhary and his friend, Harishankar Dubey, had just returned to Choudhary’s residence after watching a movie when the incident took place. “He was inside the car, while Dubey was standing nearby talking on the phone. The assailant fired three rounds at Choudhary of which one hit Dubey on his leg,” said AV Beg, police sub-inspector of Virar police station.

The CCTVs installed outside Choudhary’s home helped the police identify and track down the accused, Mehul Chodankar, 27, and Chandu Patil.

“Chodankar used to work for Choudhary, but he was sacked a year ago after he allegedly misappropriated Rs50 lakh. Chou-dhary had asked Chodankar to return the money and there was animosity between the two. The duo had planned a settlement,” Beg said.
